It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s Superman, soaring in for his grand DCU entrance. There’s been a lot of buzz and excitement surrounding James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revival of the DC Universe with a brand new DCU timeline. And at the forefront of this ambitious new era stands the picture-perfect, all American hero, Superman, kickstarting the franchise with a new wave of hope, strength, and timeless legacy.

James Gunn’s Superman (2025) brings a fresh ensemble to the beloved franchise, though some of the faces might be more familiar than you’d expect. If you're the kind of fan who can't focus on the plot because you're too busy trying to place that one actor, don't worry, we've got you covered. Skip the mid-movie Google search and check out where you've seen the new Superman cast before they stepped into the cape and cowl.

David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman

David Corenswet is next in line to join the elite rank of actors entrusted to be DC’s symbol of hope and justice, Clark Kent. If the past is any indication to go by, this role could be a career breakthrough for the actor, launching him to global stardom, just like it did for Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill. But before taking on the role of one of the most popular superheroes in Hollywood history, Corenswet actually played the lead role in the series Hollywood. In Hollywood, Corenswet plays the role of Jack Castello, a WWII veteran who moves to Hollywood in hopes of becoming an actor. He also starred as Lili Reinhart’s love interest in the romantic drama Look Both Ways and as a projectionist in the indie-horror film Pearl.

Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane

Lois Lane is fiercely independent, quick-witted, and full of heart, a role fans already know Rachel Brosnahan is perfect for with her earlier performance as the sharp tongued and charismatic Mrs Maisel in Amazon’s hit series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. While Brosnahan might not have the stage to herself in Superman, fans can look forward to her character’s quick comebacks and verbal sparring at the newsroom with her boss, Perry White. In addition to her Emmy award-winning performance in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you might also recognise Brosnahan from her role as Rachel Posner, a troubled sex worker in Netflix’s acclaimed political-thriller show, House of Cards. Originally she was only booked for two episodes, but her character became an instant fan favorite, earning her a regular spot on the show for four seasons and her first Emmy nomination.

Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor

Nicholas Hoult is stepping into the menacing shoes of Lex Luthor, taking on the role of Superman’s ultimate nemesis in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman. He follows in the footsteps of iconic actors like Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey, each of whom left a lasting mark on the character. Hoult is one of the more easily recognisable actors in the ensemble, having landed his first Hollywood breakthrough in the 2002 film About a Boy at just 11 years old. Longtime fans may know him from his performances in Mad Max: Fury Road and Warm Bodies. His more recent performances include the morally twisted roles of an arrogant, petulant foodie in The Menu and a darkly comedic, abusive emperor in the royal satire The Great.

Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific

Edi Gathegi, best known for playing Dr. Jeffrey Cole on House and the villainous vampire Laurent in Twilight and its sequel The Twilight Saga: New Moon, is taking on the role of Michael Holt, a.k.a. Mister Terrific, the third-smartest man on Earth in the DC Universe. Mister Terrific will be one of several supporting superheroes joining Superman on his new quest in the upcoming live-action film. Gathegi is no stranger to the superhero genre, having previously played Darwin in X-Men: First Class. Fans may also recognize Mister Terrific from the CW series Arrow, where actor Echo Kellum played the role of Curtis Holt, another version of the tech-savvy genius.

Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho

As one of the most beloved comic book superheroes, fans are eagerly anticipating Metamorpho’s big-screen debut. Actor Anthony Carrigan, best known for playing NoHo Hank in HBO’s comedy series Barry, will take on the mantle and bring the Element Man to life for the first time on the big screen. This role marks Carrigan’s second appearance in the DC franchise. Prior to Superman, he portrayed a serial killer in Gotham.

Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern

With more than 100 acting credits to his name, including Castle, Firefly, The Rookie, Santa Clarita Diet, Modern Family, and Serenity, the real question is: Where haven’t you seen Nathan Fillion? Although this is his first time playing Green Lantern in a live-action film, you might recognise him as the voice behind Vigilante in the animated series Justice League Unlimited and as the voice of Green Lantern/Hal Jordan in Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, Justice League: Doom, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, and The Death of Superman.

Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl

Isabela Merced isn’t quite a household name yet, but she’s well on her way with standout performances in films like Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Alien: Romulus, and The Last of Us. Her role as the fierce, warrior-spirited Hawkgirl in the upcoming Superman film might just be her breakout moment into global stardom.

Wendell Pierce as Perry White

From playing the iconic Detective Buck Moreland in The Wire to taking on another investigative role as the editor in chief of Daily Planet, where both Clark Kent, and Lois Lane work, Wendell Pierce’s latest casting feels like a natural and fitting transition. He also has a solid track record for portraying commanding, no-nonsense characters, as seen in Suits, where he played the formidable name partner, Robert Zane.

Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.

Frank Grillo has officially jumped universes, from playing Brock Rumlow, the S.H.I.E.L.D. double agent in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, who later evolved into the supervillain Crossbones in Captain America: Civil War, to taking on the role of Rick Flag Sr. in the DC Universe. Rick Flag Sr., the father of the more well-known modern-day Suicide Squad leader Rick Flag Jr., is portrayed in the comics as a decorated war hero who led early versions of Task Force X, the team that would eventually become the Suicide Squad. Grillo has already made his debut as Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, voicing the character in the animated series. He is also set to reprise the role in live-action for Season 2 of Peacemaker.

María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer

Venezuelan actress María Gabriela de Faría is set to appear as Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, in the upcoming Superman film, laying the groundwork for a planned The Authority movie. Angela Spica is a brilliant scientist who replaces her blood with nanites, granting her the ability to reshape her body into weapons, generate force fields and energy blasts, and even fly. María’s best known for her work in South American films and TV shows, though international audiences may recognize her as Maria Salazar from the action series Deadly Class.

Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl

Milly Alcock, a rising star who shot to fame for her role as young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s fantasy series House of the Dragon, is now stepping into the superhero world as Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl. She'll appear in the upcoming Superman film before taking flight in her own solo project, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, slated for a 2026 release. Alcock also stars as Simone in Netflix’s upcoming black comedy Sirens. The role of Supergirl was previously portrayed by Melissa Benoist in the CW series Supergirl.

Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord

James Gunn creates the universe, and Sean Gunn lives in it. The Gunn Brothers have a long-standing history of collaborating on superhero films and TV series. Sean Gunn is known for playing Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy, Weasel and Calendar Man in The Suicide Squad, and for performing the motion capture for Rocket Raccoon in the Guardians films. They’ll now team up again for Superman, with Sean Gunn stepping into the role of Maxwell Lord, a character previously portrayed by Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman 1984. Outside of the superhero world, Sean is also widely recognized for his role as Kirk on Gilmore Girls.
